Teaching format and Daily Itinerary

Our teaching programme follows the following format. Through the years of running this camp, we have developed this format based on response from our participants as well as input from all our visiting coaches and staff. Given the international flavour of our camps, the format focuses, to start with, more on the preparation of the stroke to ensure proper propulsion of the boat. We have found it to be a truly effective way to properly teach the sculling stroke.
Almost every session of the week will take place in single sculls that are personally assigned to each participant. The equipment is of the highest quality and is maintained to a very high standard.
Each day, digital video will be taken to be reviewed with the participants during the morning break. Video offers an excellent teaching tool to further enhance the learning experience. The video is yours to keep at the end of the camp for future reference.

A typical 7 day camp itinerary

Day 1: Focus on Grip and the importance of hand placement on the handle

Day 2: Focus on Balance and setting platforms with your body; use of core in establishing these platforms

Day 3: Focus on initial movement of body away from bow to ensure proper sequential application; focus on remainder of recovery just prior to entry/catch.

Day 4: Focus on proper entry and catch of water on the blade (differentiate between entry and catch!)

Day 5: Focus on proper propulsion through the drive sequence

Day 6: Putting it all together!! Working on all parts to allow effective and efficient movement

Day 7: Chance to use tools learned throughout the week in a “race” situation.

Obviously, through out the week at the camp, it is vital to consider all the movements of the stroke during each session. Our experience, however, has led us to focus on these individual segments so that by the end of the week, there will be a proper and cohesive understanding of the sculling stroke.
The sessions are geared towards the level of each individual. CRC takes pride in offering instruction that befits each individual participant. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced sculler, CRC Sculling Camps can offer you proper teaching that is geared to your level.

Beginners: Many beginners are somewhat reluctant to sign up for the camps based on their concern that the camps will be too advanced and difficult. We have had many many beginners attend our camps over the years and don’t worry; we will ensure that your progress is at a rate that you feel comfortable with.
For the more intermediate and advanced scullers, we typically break down into different groups of 3 to 5 scullers of similar ability so that each level of participant is catered to. For the more advanced scullers, we may do some optional work that focuses on speed improvement, starts, racing strategy, etc. This will be discussed with your individual coach before each session.
